Located in the picturesque landscape of the Mackenzie Basin between Twizel and Lake Ohau with views towards Ben Ohau mountain range and boarding the Hydro scheme Pukaki Canal, our Clients purchased this lifestyle block and engaged Architecture Studio to design a new bach for their family to use on vacation and also rent to visitors where there is a strong demand for accommodation for Rowers competing at the Lake Ruataniwha. The site has its own set of challenges with extremely high winds and Earthquake fault lines requiring specialist Engineering design. It was important to provide a strong connection between indoor and outdoor area providing hardwood decks off the living, dining area and all bedrooms. Two large reinforced block chimneys were incorporated into the design to provide essential heating in the sub zero temperatures in the winter. Low maintenance, non reflective claddings were used to reduce the impact within the existing environment.
